Online Resources for Learning Other Languages in the Homeschool

We'd love to add your favourite resources for learning other languages at home to this page of links. Personal recommendations go a long way to helping other families confidently choose learning programs for their children. Please email your suggestions to Beverley.

  • Languages Online contains resources for language teachers and students. Access is free!
Downloadable 'game maker' templates enable teachers and students to build their own multimedia language games and activities. Games can be made using any language installed on your computer.
For students learning French, German, Indonesian or Italian , the website contains over 220 engaging interactive tasks and games that introduce, reinforce and recycle vocabulary. They are self-paced and self-correcting and can be repeated as desired. Activities are presented in 35 topic-based sections, and include recordings by native speakers.
Languages Online also includes over 190 printable worksheets with a variety of guided speaking, reading, writing and research tasks to complement the online activities in French, German, Indonesian and Italian. A range of support features assist teachers and students to make the most of each activity.
Kylie in South Australia recommends this resource, saying that although she uses it for her teenage daughter she thinks it is suitable for younger children: "It is a comprehensive teaching program using cartoon characters - they talk, you talk - type in answers, learn simple songs etc."
  • E.L. Easton Materials for Teaching and Learning is a resource for non-English speaking people to learn English but it has one of the most comprehensive collection of lessons and articles about all aspects of learning English - grammar, vocabulary, etymology, pronunciation, spelling, etc that I've come across. The site also has multi-lingual dictionaries. You can spend hours wandering around this site!
  • Languages Online is another resource with free worksheets and activities offering French, German, Italian and Spanish.
  • Word2Word provides links to free online resources for over 40 different languages in the hope of all people developing a better understanding of others through the use of language. The sites they link to contain lessons to help learn one language from another. The courses vary in quality and the quantity of material presented.
  • BabelNation.com is an "outstanding" new online-service offering online language courses in Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese completely free of charge. According to the website: "Whether you want to travel the world, strengthen your language skills for business purposes or just learn a language for the fun of it, "BabelNation.com" will offer you free interactive online language courses. "
