Handwriting Overview

The importance of choosing an effective handwriting curriculum cannot be underestimated. It's a choice that will shape a child's habits and abilities for life. This site is intended to assist in that decision by providing a brief overview of the major handwriting programs used nationwide, samples of their style, and links to additional information where available. Those who work with young children just learning to write face an increasingly difficult task - how to choose an effective handwriting curriculum from a wide variety of methods and styles.

Draw Your World - Handwriting Styles

There are a variety of handwriting styles, including: cursive, manuscript, Italic, D'Nealian, and New South Wales. Homeschool parents have more options. Take time to familiarize yourself with the various styles. See samples of popular handwriting styles.

PenDance Handwriting Course

Ready for a handwriting makeover? Improve the legibility of your handwriting, as well as teach you how to "dress up" your handwriting to look more "calligraphic" with PenDance.

The Write Fonts - Handwriting Fonts for Teachers

When my daughters had to start doing homework in cursive they came to me almost daily asking me to show them how to write various letters. It's been years since I learned formal cursive handwriting and my characters didn't always match what the school taught. I needed cursive handwriting fonts.

Righting Writing Wrongs

Teachers are trying new ways of teaching the cursive style to correct illegible scrawls. Handwriting often is a low priority in some schools.

photo of Beverley and Robin PainePioneering members of the home education movement in Australia, Beverley and Robin Paine are passionate advocates of true educational choice for families. They began homeschooling their children in 1986 and three years later started the South Australian Home Based Learners network.
Beverley wrote Getting Started with Homeschooling in 1995-97 and since then continues to write books and booklets on home education. She balances spending time helping home educators with working in her garden and renovating her home, as well as continuing to build her collection of writing on a variety of homeschooling subjects. Beverley maintains an extensive collection of websites as well as several Yahoo groups supporting families teaching their children at home. In 2007 Beverley joined the HEA and became a committee member in 2008: she also edits and produce the HEA Newsletter, HEA magazine, Stepping Stones for Home Educators, annual Resource Directory and other HEA publications.
